Depression is a huge and very hot topic in today’s society. It affects more than 300 million people worldwide and that number is continuously growing. It is normal to feel sadness or grief sometimes such as after a tragic event, but depression takes sadness and grief to a new level. Depression impacts one’s ability to function normally on a daily basis. Symptoms of depression include, but are not limited to headaches, loss of interest in hobbies or activities, anxiety, and trouble sleeping.
This mental health disorder is treatable and the type of treatment depends on the individual and their unique case. Developments and scientific research are always giving new insight into depression and possible causes and effective treatments.
A new study conducted at Hiroshima University in Japan investigated the behavior of RGS8, a protein that in humans is encoded by the RGS8 gene. This protein controls a hormone receptor called MCHR1, which helps to regulate sleep, feeding, and mood. The protein was put in an experiment with mice to see if it could be causing depressive behavior.
The mice were given the “swim test”. This test was used to measure the time span in which the mice were immobile. When the mice were given a drug that forced the MCHR1 to stop working, they experienced a shorter immobile period. Those whose MCHR1 was full-functioning had a longer period of immobility.
The results from this experiment have exposed completely new information to scientists. This discovery may lead them to develop a new type of treatment for individuals struggling with depression. As a result, the treatment would be an attempt to mitigate the impacts of the hormone receptor, MCHR1, that is contributing to depressive symptoms.
